A few months back we ran a contest of sorts called ‘New Year, New Start’ – the idea was: if you’d been affected by hurricane Sandy – give us your name! We did a random drawing, and the lucky winner received a photo session for free. Being that it was random, we weren’t sure who we were going to pick (obviously). There were many deserving families, and we truly wished that we could give free photos to everyone (if we could, we would!). We lucked out when we picked these guys – they were so sweet, their little one was so adorable, and they were so wonderful to work with.

Yesterday, the sky was doing some crazy stuff. I love multi-layered cloud cover, and there were many fantastic examples putting on quite a show. Additionally, the sky behind the heavy cloud cover was a supremely dazzling blue. I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence that these storms seem to roll through on Mondays, but this is the second instance where I’ve found that the weather was rather miserable, unseasonably cold, and generally yucky on the most hated day of the week. Lucky for me, this lends itself to some unique and wonderful sky photography.

This shot illustrates that dazzling blue that I was talking about hiding behind the clouds.

And here are the clouds covering up the dazzle on the opposite side of the island. I love all the layers and textures!

The thing about New Jersey, is that if you’re not at the shore, you’re in the woods. It’s kind of interesting. When you’re in the aforementioned woods, you feel like you can become easily lost – even though civilization is typically no more than a 10 minute walk. I have a hair trigger when it comes to feeling lost, so it’s a wonder I ever make it into the woods at all. These photos are special for that reason.

Having said that – I am really happy with the way they turned out. For instance – totally new color scheme going with this:

It was a gray day – and I’m pleasantly surprised at the way the reds in this shot popped out.

And now for some blue and orange (and red).

Being that I do so many sunsets, I know when one is particularly special. Usually, on ‘film’ (even if it’s digital) sunsets tend to come out orange-y. Often, they look pink-y, and they can even sometimes look red (as per yesterday’s example). Rarely, I have found – do they read as blue. A blue-ish sunset is usually the result of some heavier clouds, and a little luck. I haven’t stumbled upon many that come off as very true blue – except for Monday’s.

This is the second part of my special sunset trifecta series.

And now, step into the blue.

I originally wasn’t going to include the pebbles in the shot – but I was glad that I tried it. I have some without the pebbles, and I don’t like them as much. Those pebbles just kind of set off the pink and orange in the sky.
